HASS/LOTE

Humanities and Social Science Learning Area

In the study of Humanities and Social Science students are able to become critical thinkers through the development of social enquiry, environmental appraisal, ethical analysis and the constructive critique of past and present contexts. The program is designed to engage students’ interest while providing them with opportunity to investigate, understand and communicate effectively about the world around them.

The Humanities and Social Sciences course addresses four content areas:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Economics and Business
  • Civics and Citizenships

Senior School curriculum is designed to provide students with an interest in this area with a range of skills and knowledge required to succeed in their chosen field.

Languages other than English (LOTE)

The study of Japanese is compulsory for all students in Year 7 – 8. Students can then choose to continue this course of study in Year 9 – 12. The study of a language other than English helps to enhance the student’s development of the understanding of grammar and structure within the English language. Students are also encouraged to engage in communicating effectively in Japanese through engagement of the school’s exchange program.

Students studying Japanese are given the opportunity to become involved in the Sister School exchange program by either hosting a Japanese student or attending a tour of our Sister Schools in Japan, where students are hosted by families and are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture.
