The Arts

The Arts Learning Area offers students the opportunity to engage in a range of different areas such as: Music, Dance, Media Studies, Drama and Visual Arts. Students are given the opportunity to engage in The Arts Learning Area through experiences that allow them to use a process of enquiry, creative thinking and experimentation.

Students engaged in The Arts Learning Area achieve the following five outcomes:

  • Art Ideas – generate art works that communicate ideas
  • Art Skills and Process – use skills, techniques, processes, conventions and technologies of the Arts
  • Art Responses – use their aesthetic understanding to respond, reflect and evaluate the Arts
  • Arts in Society – understand the role of the Arts in Society.

Students engaged in the Music Program are provided with valuable learning experiences, combining behaviours which promote high order thinking skills. These skills, which also include listening, concentration and analytical skills, can be used in other Learning Areas. Student’s self-esteem can also be enriched through music performances and opportunities to be involved in performance groups.

The Drama Program focuses on building confidence, improving speaking and listening skills and introducing students to basic performance skills. Students will be encouraged to develop their imagination and concentration, self-expression, learn body control, stagecraft and improvisation.

Media Studies allows the students to learn about a range of media concepts and demonstrate their knowledge through the production of their own works. Students are able to enter local and national competitions with their work, as well as holding screenings of their own films.

The Dance program is designed to build on a student’s natural abilities and focus on developing their dance technique. Students are given opportunities to be involved in state and school performances either as individuals or groups. Students are able to build their self-esteem and self-expression skills through interpretation of choreography and performance.

The Visual Arts Program promotes innovative practice and students are encouraged to explore and represent their ideas and gain an awareness of the role artists play in reflecting, challenging and shaping society’s values. Students are encouraged to appreciate the work of other artists and build on their own skills and practices to produce artworks that communicate ideas, creative thinking and experimentation.
