Health and Physical Education studies are compulsory for all students in Year 7 -10. The aim of the program is to ensure that students develop knowledge, attitudes and skills which will enable them to make healthier lifestyle choices. Students are provided with a range of practical avenues in which to apply these skills and attitudes through their secondary education.
In Health Education, students are encouraged to develop an understanding of relevant and contemporary health and social issues, in order to enhance personal physical, social and emotional health. Topics covered by students include bullying, cyber bulling, social media, illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco use, sexual health and the nature of personal relationships.
Student development within the middle school programs are assessed by the following outcomes:
- The performance of movement skills and strategies needed for successful participation in a variety of sports and games
- Health knowledge and understanding how it applies to both personal wellbeing and the wider community
- The demonstration of self-motivation skills
- The development of interpersonal skills.
Physical Education Studies provides students with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports which in turn exposes them to a range of skills and strategies to encourage lifelong engagement. This operates as an ATAR course for university entry and students who successfully complete one of the lower school specialist programs are generally well placed to succeed.
Other pathways in Senior School Health and Physical Education exist with Outdoor Education, Health Studies, the Certificate II in Sport and Recreation and the Certificate II in Boating Studies.
